Syracuse celebrates
independent spirit by Mark Bialczak, Syracuse Post Standard Staff Writer Saturday November 08, 2008, 11:15 PM The men in Syracuse hip-hop collective Big Boyz called out their affection as they strode to the stage of the Palace Theatre Saturday night to accept three hip-hop and rap awards at the second edition of the Upper State Independent Awards. "I thank God," said Section Q after accepting the best hip-hop male award. "I share this award with all of you. All the independent artists." Along with the awards for music and the arts were awards given for best athletes and most improved students from the Syracuse City School District. A handful of presenters and performers expressed joy about this week's election of Barack Obama as the nation's next president. And Jimmy Black sent the crowd home happy with a positive rap. "We all winners, you dig?" he said. |

West Coast singer returns for Indie Awards Chuck Schiele says he's 'delighted' somebody's taking charge of the arts. Thursday, November 06, 2008 By Mark Bialczak, Syracuse Post Standard Staff Writer When his nephew, Tyler Walton, was nominated for an Upper State Indie award last year, Chuck Schiele flew from the West Coast to his former hometown of Syracuse to show his support. Walton won in the best producer category during the first-ever awards show, which was held at the Palace Theatre. Schiele stuck around to shake hands with show founder Kendric T. Bedell and his wife, host Sheridonna. "I was delighted to see somebody in Syracuse do something about taking charge of the arts," Schiele says. "That's how I live my life here (in San Diego)." Last week, Bedell called and asked Schiele if he'd like to perform at the second edition of the event, Saturday night at the Palace on James Street in Syracuse. The answer was yes, and Chuck Schiele and The Whole Thing was born. The group will feature Schiele, on vocals and guitar; his boyhood pal growing up in Lyncourt, Mike Brown, on lead guitar; nephew Walton on electronica; and a Central New York rhythm section of former Back Alley Boys Mike Cappucilli on bass and Ron Thompson on drums. Brown, who now goes by the first name of Mic (rhymes with pick), will be coming east, too. The former bandmate of Thompson in The Velcros lives in Los Angeles, where he's the regional guitar and amp product specialist for Guitar Center. "I've been around the world three times and toured the country, but I've never had a gig in Syracuse," says Schiele, 46, who moved west two days after graduating from North Syracuse High School. Hometown gigs apparently come in bunches; he says he's scheduled to play the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que with this California Americana-style band in April. That'll give Schiele another chance to visit his mother, Carol Byrd, who lives in West Monroe. The West Coast invasion adds to Bedell's enthusiasm for the second edition of the awards show. "The energy in the Palace is going to be incredible," says Bedell, who'll also perform, under his rap name of Jimmy Black. Last year, about 250 people attended the debut of the Upper State Indies. Bedell says a crowd of 300 to 350 this year to see winners announced in 30 categories would make him happy - but a sellout of 650 would make him even happier. Bedell says the show is for the whole community. This year, he's invited seniors from the Vivian Teal Howard Residential Health Care Facility and P.E.A.C.E. Inc., and told Syracuse teachers they were welcome to use tickets as a reward for students who do well in the classroom. "I'm happy that there's something for the people," he says. "We need that, something people want to be part of."
